Finding the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus): Restoring populations of this critically endangered feline in Southern Europe. Several times we joined Spanish ecologists studying the Iberian Lynx in Coto de Doñana and we helped them locate tagged lynxes. Unfortunately without success. However last time, after many years, we went to the Sierra de Andujar Natural Park to successfully find the Eurasian lynx there. Further in this beautiful area we found other endemic species such as the Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica), Iberian green woodpecker (Picus sharpei), Iberian grey shrike (Lanius meridionalis) and Iberian magpie (Cyanopica cooki).
To protect and help Spanish endemic species, we need to focus on habitat preservation by safeguarding key ecosystems like Mediterranean forests and wetlands. Combat invasive species through monitoring and removal programs. Promote sustainable land use to prevent habitat destruction from urbanization or agriculture. Support restoration projects for degraded habitats and establish protected areas for critical species. Encourage citizen science and environmental education to raise awareness and engage communities. Advocate for stricter environmental policies and research to understand species’ needs and threats. Lastly, collaborate with conservation organizations to ensure effective, long-term action plans for biodiversity.
